Portland
Straddling the Willamette River, Portland is the largest city in Oregon. To compensate for damp winters, the city is culturally very alive with entertainment such as music and theatre. Statistics show Portland to be one of the most desirable places to live in the United States.
History Portland was founded in 1844 as a little port town on the west bank of the Willamette River. Much of the town was destroyed by a great fire in 1873, but after its rebuilding it developed into a thriving city. When new ports were built on Puget Sound in the early 20th C., however, Portland lost its leading role.
