Northern Belize

Farmland and vast sugarcane fields characterize northern Belize and most of the Corozal and Orange Walk Districts. Apart from farmland, the hilly western end of the region is made up of dense jungle while the Caribbean shoreline is a maze of mangrove swamplands. Attractive natural settings and cultural wonders are found in this region's many biosphere reserves and Mayan archaeological sites.

Mennonites, Mayans and Mestizos tend to sugar extraction and processing, the prime industry of the northern region of Belize. These lands were mostly settled by Mayan refugees from Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula during the 1847-1901 War of the Castes. Northern Belize's close proximity to Mexico and the number of Caste War settlers gives this region
